Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

A position for a Research and Development Geophysicist is available within the Multi-Component Research Team, based in Crawley.  The R&D geophysicist takes part in researching and developing new multi-component seismic data processing methods to provide CGGVeritas with new products or services with high added value to meet market requirements.  This position reports to the Senior R&D Advisor, Head of Multi-Component Research.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Innovation - improves own technical knowledge and expertise by assessing academic publications, attending technical presentations, workshops, conferences or seminars and participating in research consortiums.
  • Research - participates in defining contents and specifications of a research project in collaboration with research group and processing operations and reviews existing literature on the subject.  Researches either independently or as part of a team, performing feasibility studies on new techniques, communicating results and ideas to other members of the team.  Produces a software program or adapts existing software to implement new algorithms or mehodologies.  Tests software using both synthetically generated and real seismic data.  Controls and evaluates the quality of the software produced, prepares the user documentation and communicates the software functionality and limitations to processing geophysicists.
  • Internal and external relations - contributes to CGGVeritas' know-how and brand image by publishing on technical journals and presenting at international conferences.  Develops a close relationship with processing operations and presents R&D results internally and to clients.  Supports operations in the application of new techniques.  Travel is occasionally required and depending on technical knowledge and experience can involve attending technical conferences or university consortia meetings, visiting field locations, visiting client offices or other company offices.  Assists in protecting CGGVeritas' intellectual property by identifying and documenting patentable ideas.

Job Requirements

  • PhD in geophysics, earth sciences, signal processing , physics, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, telecommunications, image processing, mathematics or related disciplines is required.
  • Experience in signal processing and programming is required, including at least one of C, C++, Fortran.  The candidate should demonstrate excellent problem-solving and communication skills and must be able to work well in a team.
  • A PhD in seismic exploration which demonstrates the candidate ability in algorithmic research and development is highly desirable, especially if in the field of seismic imaging (migration and model-building).  Alternatively, up to 3 years of experience in researching and developing seismic processing in an industrial environment are also desirable.
